Amateur vs Homemade vs Professional: What's the Difference?

"Amateur" and "homemade" are used almost interchangeably, and professional studio content sometimes gets labelled as either. They are three different things, and knowing the difference helps you find what you want faster. This guide explains each term, how they overlap in the VEXN catalogue and how to use them when you browse. It is written for adults aged 18 and over.

Amateur: about the performers

Amateur describes who is in the scene: non-professional performers, often real couples, rather than people who work in adult video for a living. It does not say how the video was shot. Some amateur content is filmed on a phone in a bedroom and some is shot with a tripod and decent lighting. What defines it is that the people on screen are not working professionals.

Homemade: about the production

Homemade is a production label: a handheld camera, natural light, no crew and usually a real room. It says how the video was made, not who is in it. Most homemade videos are also amateur, but the two labels answer different questions. Amateur is about the cast, and homemade is about the camera.

Professional: neither of the above

Professional or studio content has a crew, produced lighting and contracted performers, even when it is styled to look raw. POV videos are a good example: they can be deliberately shot to look spontaneous, but the polish gives them away. Colour grading, several camera angles and a recognisable performer from a paid roster are the usual signs. On VEXN the Pornstar tag marks much of this group.

How they overlap in our catalogue

At the time of writing (October 2026) the catalogue has 87 Amateur videos and 115 Homemade videos. The overlap is real but not total:

50 videos carry both tags.
37 are Amateur but not tagged Homemade.
65 are Homemade but not tagged Amateur.

So a tag is not a safe stand-in for the other one. If you want unscripted, real-feeling content, Homemade is the narrower filter, because an amateur cast is sometimes filmed with studio-grade gear. If you want people who are not working performers, Amateur is the better filter, because homemade-style videos can also feature professionals imitating the look.

What the numbers say about length

The three groups differ in how long a video runs. Both Amateur and Homemade videos average 28 minutes. Videos with the Pornstar tag average 38 minutes, and the whole catalogue averages 37. In practice, amateur and homemade clips tend to be shorter, which suits a phone camera and a single location, while studio scenes are built to run longer. Use the runtime on each card as a quick way to tell which kind of video you are opening.

What our visitors open

Between 11 September and 18 October 2026 we recorded 4,524 views of videos still on the site, with bots left out. Amateur videos, 9 percent of the catalogue, received 321 of them (7 percent). Homemade videos, 12 percent of the catalogue, received 201 (4 percent). Both are opened less than their size would suggest, so on our site these labels describe a lot of titles but not the busiest ones. That is a five-week snapshot, part of it driven by our own posts on X, so it shows what our visitors choose, not what the whole internet watches.

How to search

Want real couples? Open Amateur, then use the related-tag chips to add a region or a body type.
Want a handheld, one-room look? Open Homemade.
Want credited performers and a script? Open Pornstar or a channel such as Brazzers.
Not sure? Check the runtime and the cast line on the card: a long runtime with named performers points to a studio scene, and a short one with no cast points to a homemade clip.

A note on credits and consent

Amateur and homemade uploads often do not name the people in them. We say so on the movie page rather than guess. The performers in any video on VEXN should be adults who agreed to be filmed and to have the video published. If you appear in a video without agreeing to it, use the DMCA page and we will respond as it describes.

Questions

Is homemade always amateur?

Not always. In our catalogue 65 Homemade videos are not tagged Amateur. Some homemade-style videos are made by professionals, so the two tags should not be treated as the same.

Why do some studio videos look amateur?

Because the look is a style. Studios shoot POV and "found footage" scenes to feel spontaneous. The production polish and the credited cast usually give them away.

Where do the videos play?

From the site that hosts each one, in an embedded player. VEXN does not host the files, and the movie page shows the source.
